The YCT (Youth Chinese Test) is a standardized examination for elementary, middle, and high school students to evaluate their proficiency in the Chinese language level. It is designed for people whose first language is not Chinese.

The Confucius Institute at Mason can offer the YCT (Youth Chinese Test) at your school or institute upon prior arrangement. We can help your teachers register students, process test payments and proctor the Chinese proficiency exam. Please contact our office to request a test date during school year, weekdays or weekends.



Level Description Vocabulary
1 Test takers who are able to pass the YCT (Level I) can understand and use some of the most common Chinese phrases and sentences and possess the ability to further their Chinese language studies. 80
2 Test takers who are able to pass the YCT (Level II) can understand and use some simple Chinese phrases and sentences and cope with basic level communications. 150
3 Test takers who are able to pass the YCT (Level III), having reached an excellent level in basic Chinese, can communicate on familiar daily topics in a simple manner. 300
4 Test takers who are able to pass the YCT (Level IV) can communicate in Chinese at a basic level in their daily, academic and professional lives. When traveling in China, they can manage most forms of communication in Chinese. 600



Contact our office to discuss arranging a YCT test date at your school site on a weekday or weekend that is mutually convenient. Once the date has been decided, our staff will guide you through the process of having students register for the test online and provide you with test fee payments to be processed by the Confucius Institute at Mason. Our teachers will come to your school to administer the test. Registration steps are simple:

  1. Have students complete the appropriate registration form and prepare test fee payment.
  2. Submit the following items before the registration deadline:
    • Online registration form (or request paper registration form if online not possible)
    • Test fee — payment by cash or check made payable to George Mason University
    • Digital photo (optional)
